TRAVEL
TIPS FROM UTILA LODGE RESORT
As everyone knows by now. Most all major airlines have limited luggage
weight to 50 pounds per bag. As divers we have been fighting
this for years but the inevitable has come. It is not as bad
as it seems if we use some common sense when pre planning a trip and
packing.
Continental now charges $25.00 extra for 50.1 pounds to 70.0 pounds.
Here are a few tips to help deal with this situation and others.
Look at your luggage. Some soft sided and hard cases weigh a
lot by themselves empty. Pick luggage that has the least
amount of weight for what you are putting in the bag. Remember that you
can only put 50 pounds so the days of the "divers carry all bags" are
about over.
Check the measurements of your carry on bags. They are
getting real serous about size.
Pack all your necessary medications as well as a t shirt, swim suit and
bare essentials. Most companies will look close at regulator
sets so make sure yours has no knife or other unnecessary item
attached. Also pack your prescription mask. Carry
on bags are a good place for books or magazines that you may be
bringing. These add weight fast. Lap top computers are
getting easier to bring with. Most security will only ask for
you to remove from your carry on and place in a tray.
Toiletry bags and needs. Bring what you need to last your
trip. Look for travel size shampoo, conditioner, sun block,
contact eye wear solutions etc. Small containers can be left at the
lodge to save some weight for your trip home.
Dive gear, make sure you only bring what you will use on your
vacation. Make sure it is all dry and the BC'd is drained
completely. Flashlights, You should bring enough batteries
for all your electronic gear. Most batteries are available on
the island if needed. You may leave your dead or half dead
and full batteries when you leave so this will allow you some extra
poundage for souvenirs and our excellent Honduras coffee.
There are plenty of snacks and candies available on the island as well
as our gift shop. If you are close on weight you can get
almost all you want in country.
Weight belts. We have web belts available. We use
"Sea Pearls" hard weights available in 3 and 4 pound
increments. Do not bring extra weights unless it is
absolutely necessary.
Dress at Utila Lodge and Utila is very casual. You do not
need more than t shirts and dry shorts for meals and wandering
around. A good pair of sandals or flip flops are good for
going downtown and even traveling from home. Unless you are
in three feet of snow when you leave.
If you plan on a horseback eco tour bring a light pair of long pants,
long sleeve shirt, and tennis shoes.
Winter months you may need a sweat shirt, light coat, and rain gear on
some cooler days and evenings.
Packing your daily needs. Most days swimsuits, towels, and
T-shirts will air dry. I recommend that when
packing take a swim suit or shorts and t shirt and roll in a tight roll
and put in a zip lock baggie. This keeps your cloths
organized and also makes a nice way to pack wet cloths for the way
home. Bring what you think you will need for your
stay. We have a place in the room porches to hang wet cloths
and also laundry service for a small fee. We also offer a boat towel
service.
Traveling, Getting through metal detectors now days is almost
embarrassing when you have to strip in front of god and
everyone. I have been traveling in a light pair of cotton
shorts or even swim trunks with lots of pockets. Do not wear
a belt. Sandals and slip on shoes are nice since you still
have to take them off when going through security. We are
divers, Why hide the fact with a lot of cloths. Leave all
expensive and extra jewelry at home. Cigarettes lighters are
illegal to carry on board the planes. You need to put them in
checked baggage if you want to keep them. Cigarettes are relatively
cheap compared to the states. There is no chewing tobacco
available on the island or in Honduras.
You only need your travel documents, passport and wallet on your
person. Keep it simple and getting through the airports will
be no problems. Check out the list of items you can not bring
in the plane cabin on each carriers web page.
Everywhere in Honduras there is a extra charge added to your balance
for using credit cards. We STRONGLY suggest travelers checks
if possible. Most major credit cards are happy accepted.
Remember that your gear might weigh an extra few pounds due to water
and wetness when you leave.
These are only suggestions so use your own common sense when packing.
