Important Information for Travel
Dear Adventure Traveler,
Dip your paddle into the Caribbean. Take a journey into the past
on the lovely Isle of Guanaja. This quiet island with its green
hills, pine forests and dense jungle is surrounded by the tropical
waters of the Great Maya Reef. With 90% of the land and reef system
set aside as National preserve, its unspoiled beauty remains a
treasure. West Peak Inn is the perfect starting point for a tropical paddling adventure. The
pace of life is slow on the island, and it is easy to find solitude
on the sandy shores. The main town of Bonacca, built over several
small cays, is a colorful place of fragile stilt-houses, well-worn
footpaths, rickety docks and narrow canals. Guanaja combines the
undersea world of coral and beautiful fish with the serene island
life of times past. Visitors will find this island and West Peak
a peaceful and relaxing sojourn from the outside world.
West Peak Inn is base camp for sea kayaking tours. Experienced guides tailor expeditions to the needs of small groups. The single-man kayaks are well equipped for either experience or beginning paddlers. Those guests preparing to explore by kayak will spend the first day packing their Apostle with camping gear and planning their expedition. Beginner groups will be given instruction and time for practice. Others may want to surf the waves at the point if the trade winds are good. Trips will be determined by weather conditions and prevailing winds. Kayakers will paddle, snorkel, and explore the reef as they make their way to the beach campsites. After setting up camp, guests can take a stroll up the beach to a small inn for meals. ALL participants should be in good health reasonably fit, able to swim. We welcome children when accompanied by an adult, however, we do not recommend these trips for children under 14 years old.
Our stand-alone secluded cabins are equipped with 120 volt electricity, double and 2 single beds, ceiling fans, tiled showers and clear spring water.
For non-kayakers we offer visits to the island water falls, and visits to town; and of course plenty of wonderful snorkeling and beach combing. These side trips can be arranged and paid for upon arrival in the islands. Those interested in scuba diving can make arrangements through West Peak. We will book diving trips with the Island House resort. Their dive boat handles small groups of 4 to 5 divers. Diving trips must be booked and paid for in advance.
Clothing/Accessories Loose-fitting, medium-weave fabrics are best in hot, humid climates. Beside the normal shorts and tops we recommend guests bring at least one outfit that covers arms and legs to provide protection against inclement weather.
| One long-sleeved shirt, long trousers | Ground pad, light blanket, or sleeping bag |
| Light weights rain jacket | Plenty of insect repellant & "after-itch" cream |
| Hat & sunglasses with good UV protection | Plastic water bottle |
| Sandals & socks | Flashlight |
| Swimsuit & beach towel | Paddling gloves |
| Mask, fins & snorkel | Small day pack for small items |
Travel/Packing
Guests will be met at the Guanaja airstrip by a West Peak boat
each Saturday afternoon. If for some reason a flight is delayed
arrangements will be in place to catch up with the group. In case
of baggage delay, the following items should be packed in your
carry-on bag: toiletries, medications, passport, money, camera,
film, swimsuit, and a change of clothes. All bags should be clearly
tagged with YOUR NAME WEST PEAK INN, GUANAJA, BAY ISLANDS, HONDURAS,
C.A.
Weather
January through September are the driest and most temperate months
in the islands, with temperatures ranging between 75 and 85 degree
F. January can still have tropical storms and as with most tropical
locales, spells of cloudy weather and rain are possible during
any month, but the wettest are November and December. For kayakers
wanting the exhilaration surfing the waves of the trade winds the
best months are January and February. The sea is most quiet during
April, May and June.
Health
There are no official requirements or special precautions for
travel in Honduras. Malaria is known in some regions. Travelers
may or may not choose to take any prophylaxis, however, it is
advisable that you check with your doctor. You may want to ask
about Hepatitis vaccine as well. Routine vaccinations such as
diphtheria and tetanus should be current. Insect repellent is
a must in the tropics, as is sun block so bring plenty. For upset
stomachs you may want to pack Imodium or a similar product. We
will ask you to sign a waiver of liability form prior to final
confirmation.
Currency
The Honduran currency is the Lempiras. The exchange rate is highly
volatile and can change daily, as of Sep. 2002 the rate was 16
Lempiras to $1.00 US. Visitors can easily exchange or use US dollars
but other currencies are difficult to exchange. West Peak will
accept either US dollars or Lempiras as payment for excursions
and bar drinks. In the islands Travelers Checks can be difficult
to cash and usually at a lower exchange rate.
Language and Culture
Knowing some Spanish is helpful especially on the mainland. However,
the Bay Islanders speak English even though Spanish is the official
language. As most islanders have roots going back to the traders,
slaves and pirates of the British era, English continues to be
the common language.
