About Plantation Beach Resort
Plantation Beach Resort and the Cayos Cochinos Reserve The archipelago known as CAYOS COCHINOS,
which is part of the Bay Islands of Honduras, and all Cays and Reefs within more than a 5 mile radius
is now officially a 'PROTECTED BIOLOGICAL RESERVE'. The area totals more than 149 square kilometers.

A commission for the protection and restoration of the archipelago was appointed by the President
of Honduras and a contract between the HONDURAN CORAL REEF FUND, and the SMITHSONIAN
TROPICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE was agreed upon. The area was granted 'Park Status' in
November 1993. The SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE will act as managers of the natural resources,
both on land and in the sea. They have trained several officers of the Honduran Navy and Civilians
as Park Rangers. From their permanent laboratory on Cichino Pequeno, the SMITHSONIAN Scientists
and personnel will perform many functions, including supervising the enforcement of strict fishing
regulations, limits for certain marine species, protecting the turtle nesting areas and bird sanctuaries,
etc. Informative nature trails will also be established on both large islands. The SMITHSONIAN
RESEARCH CENTER'S laboratories will be available to our guests for special tours. The coral reef
system in Cayos Cochinos has always been in excellent health with lots of competition for space
among the invertebrates, hard and soft corals, algae and sponges. Now with the elimination of all
nets, traps and long lines our fish population is even morespectacular. Enormous schools of fish
species are now more common. Turtles, dolphins and rays are being spotted more often. Just last
week a 20+ whale shark was spotted off Pelican Point Wall, just 5 minutes from the resort. The specialty
in Cayos Cochinos, however, is still the 'odd creatures'. Common here are tunicates, nudibranchs,
sea horses, frogfish, batfish, flying gurnards and scorpion fish..... EVERYTHING THAT WAS GREAT
ABOUT CAYOS COCHINOS JUST GOT BETTER!!!
