Honduras North Coast

Spanish forts overlooking the Caribbean still stand guard against pirate attack . Ancient, and some not so ancient ghosts haunt the cemetaries. Steamy banana docks, broken taxis, bustling street markets, sandy beaches, quiet estuaries, and lush cloud forests with cascading falls - it's not an old black and white movie; it's the real thing in living color.   And everywhere are the sights and sounds; outdoor cafés, Garifuna music, and spicy accents of happy people enjoying a day in the sun.

The Lodge at Pico Bonito
La Ceiba area

This world class hotel and jungle lodge is located on 200 acres inside the reserve adjacent to the Pico Bonito National Park. Enjoy fine accommodations in a cloud forest setting: 22 secluded cabins connected by raised wooden walkways, restaurant, bar and swimming pool are nestled among cacao and coffee trees on the slopes of the towering mountain. Trails are well marked, professionally maintained, and wooden platform towers allow spectacular views at canopy level. The lodge even has a staff naturalist to lead the way. Pack a bottle of wine and a swimsuit. There are several irresistible waterfalls and crystal pools to cool off in. Besides the on premise attractions, the folks at the Lodge are happy to set up a whole menu of side tours ranging from canopy tours to white water rafting.

White Water Rafting
Chattering parrots, crashing waterfalls, and impossibly green canyon walls meet you at every bend. This half day trip down the Rio Cangrejal is by far the most popular river trip in the country and can even be done affordably in a single day with round trip flights from Roatán. It includes all equipment, professional guides, a tropical picnic, and one night double accommodations in La Ceiba, 5 hour raft trip, class II - IV rapids, and a picnic lunch.

Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge
If you're lucky the old burra will be running (a locomotive relic from plantation days,) you'll chug across a lowland plantation toward the river where you board your boat. Drifting downstream, you observe wildlife (monkeys, manatees, and exotic birds such as the boat billed heron) enjoying lunch enroute. There's a stop and time for a swim where the river empties into the salty Caribbean, before the return trip and transfer to your hotel for the evening. This is a fun and  interesting trip for all ages.

Tela Area

Punta Sal Marine Park and Lancetilla Botanical Gardens
From San Pedro Sula or La Ceiba, we head overland to Tela and its famous Lancetilla Botanical Gardens where we see rare and exotic tropical plants from around the world as well as a huge variety of bird species. In the afternoon we reach Triunfo de la Cruz, a little Garifuna village outside of Tela with sandy beaches and coconut trees where we stay overnight. The next morning our open boat explores the wildlife and mangrove forests of Laguna de los Micos in the Punta Sal Marine Park, a refuge created to protect the habitat of local species like white faced monkeys, manatees, and ocelots. After a walking tour, sightseeing and shopping, in the lively port town of Tela in the afternoon, we head back to our hotel for the evening.

Trujillo Area

Glorious beaches, lively Garifuna culture and a breezy view from your hillside hotel are just a few  good reasons to visit this coastal port, which incidentally was the first capital of Honduras and hideaway to a number of famous, or infamous, North Americans before the turn of the century. Writer William Sydney Porter, apparantly a rather poor banker, wrote his popular novel Of Cabbages and Kings  here while avoiding U.S. embezzlement charges. You know him by his pen name, O' Henry. Thanks to a British firing squad, the less fortunate William Walker, a notorious Tennessean and self proclaimed Emperor of Nicaragua is still hanging out in the local cemetery. Regardless of your personal reasons for visiting, you are sure to enjoy interesting architecture, a coastal fortress, and a colorful history.

Trujillo Escape
This escape includes a  walking tour of the city, a trip to the Garifuna community of Santa Fe, and on your last morning, a 4 wheel drive jeep tour high into the Capiro-Calentura mountains overlooking the sea. Includes 2 nights hotel and transfers from La Ceiba.
