La Mosquitia

Patucah River Expedition Photo"The most extensive contiguous rain forest in Central America offers rare riches to those who take the time to tread lightly... unique ecosystems, flora, fauna, and the indigenous people of the forest."

Patuca River Expedition
Moskito Coast

Our favorite jungle river expedition is back! We run four wheel drive vehicles - until the roads run out, switch to mule back - until we run out of trail, then travel in dugout pipantes down the Cayumel and Patuca rivers deep into the Moskito Coast and the Rio Platano biosphere. Finally, escorted by the Moskito children of the village of Wampusirpi to the grass strip outside of town, a chartered bush plane flies us up and over the jungle and back to civilization. This is an authentic expedition through rural Honduras. You will share the lifestyle local populations in the rain forest. Good physical condition is required. 7 Days/6 Nights, departs Saturdays from Tegucigalpa, returns to La Ceiba.

Complete Information

Rio Platano Biosphere River Expedition

This three night adventure trip is probably the most popular in the Mosquitia, but that does not mean your are likely to see any other tourists. An array of wildlife, both flora and fauna, await you in the rain forest of the Rio Platano Biosphere, the traditional lands of the forest dwelling Pech Indians. Flying the Caribbean coast from La Ceiba to Palacios, we'll then travel by motorized canoe through vast mangrove lagoons before heading up the Rio Platano into the heart of the reserve. Nights are spent camping or in huts provided by the community. Cool streams provide for a welcome swim. Community life and ancient petroglyphs give insight into the oldest civilization of the region.

Eastern Passage

Featured in Outside Magazine, this could well be the most exciting adventure in Central America. Led by an enthusiastic and entertaining botanist, this expedition follows the crystal rapids of the Rio Wampu to the Patuca River and the remote Tawahka Sumo community of Krausirpe. Then it's an overland trek on the historic Wankibila Trail to the Ahuahuas River. Inflating the rafts once again, you'll float the rapids into the Rio Coco, which forms the Nicaraguan border. Arriving in the Moskito village of Ahuasbila, transfer by pickup to Puerto Lempira on the Caratasca Lagoon. Dense jungle, a multitude of rivers, diverse ecosystems and encounters with indigenous cultures highlight this expedition. (For the high adrenaline crowd, this expedition is also available in a "build your own balsa wood raft" format.).

La Mosquitia Bird Watching

This is a specially designed itinerary allowing bird watchers great opportunities to observe numerous species of birds in different ecological zones at the best time of day. Led by a biologist native to the Mosquitia, you'll travel the beaches, marshes, Caribbean pine forests, transitional zones and rain forest in search of interesting bird fauna. Includes the Rio Platano and petroglyphs.
